STEPHAN SALISBURY, 2012 Recipient
Philadelphia Archaeological Forum Award of Merit
Citation read by PAF President Douglas Mooney at the award presentation ceremony, October 13, 2012.
The Philadelphia Archaeological Forum Award of Merit is presented to Stephan Salisbury for news coverage that enhances public understanding of archaeology in Philadelphia. Over the past decade and a half, Stephan’s news reporting has highlighted the work of local archaeologists and institutions. Each journalistic foray has succeeded in rendering a finely etched digest of often complex information that engages and enlightens the curious reader. Most significantly, his stories have carefully and conscientiously explained how and why local archaeological research is carried out, and remind us all of what it means for our country’s history, and for our city and its residents, when required and recommended archaeological investigations are not undertaken. In doing this, Stephan has focused needed attention onto the political and economic pressures shaping the preservation and protection of the city’s unique and important archaeological sites.
Stephan Salisbury’s sustained journalistic efforts have helped to provide Philadelphians with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the city’s unique archeological heritage.Executed with consummate skill and verve, his writing reveals how relevant and vital archaeology can be in our lives today. Readers of Stephan’s work—whether they are politicians, policy makers or members of the general public—learn why an understanding of the archaeological past matters to them, and how it enriches our entire community. We thank Stephan for all that he has done for Philadelphia archaeology and honor him with the Philadelphia Archaeological Forum’s Award of Merit.
