DANIEL CROZIER, Recipient, 2012 Philadelphia Archaeological Forum Award of Merit
Citation read by PAF President Douglas Mooney at the Awards presentation ceremony on October 13th, 2012. (Daniel Crozier was unable to attend the awards ceremony in person and was presented with his award at a later date.)
The 2012 Award of Merit is presented to Daniel Crozier for service to the field of historical archaeology in Philadelphia. As we look back at the history of archaeology in Philadelphia and of the Philadelphia Archaeological Forum, we see there are many contributions that deserve to be recognized. With the establishment of the Award of merit in PAF’s 15th year, we now begin to honor those whose efforts have paved the road for where Philadelphia archaeology and our organization are today. As we look back at Philadelphia’s rich archaeological legacy, much of it tied to the celebrations of the American bicentennial, earlier years appear to be something of a golden age that stand in contrast to the cutbacks, restrictions, and elimination of archaeological site research and protections that are typical today. But in looking closer, we can also identify the emergence of the types of challenges that we now regularly deal with and that, in turn, leads us to want to also recognize those who have been willing to fight the good fight against the odds for the needs of archaeology in this city. One of those who did this early on was Daniel Crozier.
Today we recognize the efforts made by Dan Crozier while he was at Temple University, an institution with an early and long role in the city’s archaeological history. Dan’s work at the site of City Tavern and at “Area F” – now Welcome Park – faced constraints originating from outside archaeology. We furthermore recognize Dan for the invaluable support he subsequently provided to the founding of the Philadelphia Archaeological Forum – our group, whose mission is to protect and preserve the archaeological resources in the Philadelphia region. Without him and the other founders and contributors, we would not all be here today. In these contributions, we recognize Daniel Crozier’s nurturing of the development of urban and historical archaeology in Philadelphia and we thank him.
